Introducing
Peter de Mets

Before any note is written, I listen—to the resonance of your ensemble, the needs of the moment, the space where the music will live.

Whether composed for a sanctuary or a stage, a classroom or a cathedral, each piece is crafted with care and specificity. I do not write for the market. I write for the people who will bring the work to life.

From that place, the music reveals itself.

Music that Responds To Its Performers

Some works begin with a question. Others begin with silence, a harmonic shape, or a single word.

When original text is needed, I collaborate with poet Mark A. Boyle to craft language drawn from the ensemble's own experience. His poems often become the expressive core of vocal works—lived, luminous texts born from real conversation.

For instrumental commissions, the shaping begins not with words, but with tone, range, motion, and architecture. Always in service to the players who will animate the score. What follows is music composed with clarity, warmth, and deep attention to the capabilities and character of your ensemble.

Together, we create works that are not merely performable, but inhabitable.

What Ensembles Experience

A profound sense of artistic ownership among performers

Peter de Mets is a fine collaborator with musicians of all ages… he has fully included my students in the creative process and been most attentive to their developmental and educational needs. The quality of his work is both exceptional and, more importantly, memorable.

— Mark ME Dolan, Choral Director, Council Rock School District

A performance that lingers in memory

Peter is a flexible collaborator and a talented composer. He was able to take the needs of my students into consideration and create a meaningful piece. We perform Moving Forward, Looking Back annually, and it is always a highlight for students and families.

— Laurie Gougher, Music Teacher, Afton Elementary School

A rehearsal process deepened by emotional clarity and shared meaning

Peter is truly a gem of a musician and composer. He cares about the depth, direction, and dynamics of each commission. Most critical to the creative process is Peter’s ease in collaboration—it is always a joy to work with him on a newly commissioned work.

— W. Edward McCall, Artistic Director, Cantus Novus

    Toward The Unrepeatable

A well-crafted piece of music does more than fulfill a commission. It invites performers to engage with language, sound, and one another.
If you are seeking music shaped by attentiveness and trust, music that honors the people who perform it, I would be glad to begin that conversation.
