Originally composed as a choral fugue using the Sanctus text, the commissioning conductor didn’t want a fugue for this section, so Peter re-wrote the Sanctus without using this material, then published the fugue as an organ solo for his friend, Robert Knupp. The theme of the fugue is based on a tune from Rutgers University.
